Off-Track Betting was the legal way to place bets on live horse races outside of being at the track, and their parlors were neighborhood staples, throughout all 5 boroughs of NYC from the late 70s into the 2000s. The OTB parlor patrons were a mix bag of people, some with a gambling “itch”, others just looking to make a quick buck. Outside of the parlors you would catch neighborhood kids running cigarettes, booze, and newspapers, amongst other things, so as not to miss a moment of excitement, whether that was quick gain or even quicker loss. ‘Trifecta’ is a term for a horse-racing bet in which the first, second, and third place finishers are chosen in the correct order. The Aqueduct, Belmont Park and Saratoga, are all three NY tracks that are part of NYRA (New York Racing Association).
