Henderson, Nevada, early '80s. Las Vegas Downs finally opened after years of planning—a racetrack for greyhounds, with dreams of adding horses soon. But when the gates opened in 1981, it was just dogs chasin' tail around the track, no horses in sight. David Funk and his family, who owned the track, were hustling to make an honest living, pouring everything into keeping it alive.

Business was slow. The Funks asked for extensions, pitching big plans for a resort and casino, but investors weren’t biting, and the law demanded they add horse racing within two years. David Funk promised, "Give us eight weeks," but the money never came through.

By 1983, Las Vegas Downs closed its doors—just an empty track and memories of dogs, dreams, and the chase for an honest living that slipped away.
